BE GRATEFUL, BUT BE HONEST

As the year draws to a close, we often hear reminders to be grateful for how far we have come. And rightly so. There is value in appreciating the gift of life, the people who stood by us, the opportunities we received, and the lessons we learned.

But gratitude should not require us to pretend that everything was fine.

Some people are ending the year with achievements they once only dreamed of. Others are still waiting for answers, recovering from disappointment, dealing with financial pressure, or trying to make sense of changes they never expected.

You can be thankful for what you have and still wish certain things had turned out differently.

Gratitude does not mean denying your struggles. It means recognising what is good without ignoring what needs to change.

Perhaps you are grateful for your job but know that you need a healthier work environment. You appreciate your family but recognise that some relationships need attention. You are thankful for the progress you made but know that there are goals you still need to pursue.

There is nothing wrong with acknowledging these realities.

As we reflect on the months behind us, let us make room for both appreciation and honest evaluation. Celebrate your achievements, however small they may seem. Acknowledge the people who helped you along the way. Learn from your mistakes, and be honest about the habits, decisions, or circumstances that need a different approach.

Most importantly, resist the temptation to compare your year with someone else's. People carry different responsibilities and face challenges that are not always visible.

You do not need to have a perfect story to appreciate your journey.

As we prepare for the coming year, let gratitude give us perspective, honesty help us recognise what needs attention, and hope encourage us to keep moving forward.

Be thankful for what has been, honest about what is, and intentional about what comes next.
